- Min Aung Hlaing and his regime forces have excessively used artillery units and are reported to have used a drone to drop bombs which have burned 94 buildings—including the Holiness Church and staff quarters—to the ground in the western town of Thantlang, Chin State from January 30 through February 1, 2022. Since September 9, 2021, more than 900 of 2,300 civilian properties have been burned and destroyed by the junta’s regime in the town of Thantlang. These attacks are not the indirect consequences of war, but they are the direct and intentional targeting of civilians and civilian properties by the regime.
- The Peace and Justice Committee of the Chin Baptist Churches USA strongly condemns these actions of Gen. Min Aung Hlaing and his regime forces. We consider their actions to be war crimes, crimes against humanity, and a direct violation of human rights and religious freedom. Such brutal and inhuman actions perpetrated by the junta regime against the people of the Chin State proves both their complete disregard for the lives and welfare of the Chin people of Burma and the regime’s outright rejection of peace, justice, and democracy in Burma.
- The Peace and Justice Committee calls for President Joseph R. Biden, Jr. and his administration along with the US Congress to take urgent and decisive action to hold Gen. Min Aung Hlaing and his regime accountable for their inhuman brutality against the Chin people. We urge President Joe Biden to denounce these actions of Gen. Min Aung Hlaing and his regime forces and demand that they cease burning houses and buildings in Thantlang, Chin State.
- The Peace and Justice Committee calls for the UN Security Council, international community, and the National Unity Government (NUG) of Myanmar to take urgent action against Gen. Min Aung Hlaing and his regime forces in accordance with international law and to bring their actions to the International Criminal Court.
